Three and a half years ago, my husband and I left Sydney and moved to Goulburn in regional NSW. We had been thinking about moving for a number of years as we wanted a bit more room, and plus we were sick and tired of living in a shared environment; we lived in a townhouse amongst 7 others.
So in June 2021, we picked up sticks and moved after finding a place that ticked all our boxes. Large house for both of us to work from home, garages & sheds and space – yep, one and half acres to be exact.
Now the house isn’t perfect – it is totally livable but needs updating but that stuff can wait. The garden is pretty much a blank slate and over time we will plant all the plants. The front yard is approx 50m long by 30m wide and I am hoping to turn this into a native garden.
I would also like to plant some fruit trees and have a cottage garden along with a small veggie garden. All this stuff will take time and money so we need to pace ourselves.
Where we live is just on the outskirts of town, about a 5 minute drive to the centre of town and there is pretty much everything we need. Ok there maybe not everything we need – but what is missing is just a drive away.
Have we regretted moving here? Absolutely not. I love sitting outside and the only thing I can hear are the birds chirping and sometimes the damn rooster next door! But hey, we live in the country. Some days there is not a sound to be heard – total bliss.
Oh there are some things I do miss, the main one is a tree canopy. Where we lived before, Wahroonga, was known as the leafy suburb and the trees in the area were glorious. Pretty much every afternoon, hubbie and I would go for walk and we never tired of all the trees. Where we are now, there isn’t even a footpath, let alone trees.
But the one thing I have come to love and what we didn’t have in Sydney, is the big wide open sky. Now this is something I will never tire of.
We get to witness some gorgeous sunsets, get to see storms in full flight and just blue, blue, blue.
